Jewelry

Asia has had jewelry as a major center piece of its cultural heritage for more than 7,000 years with jade being the primary input. The second half of the 20th century saw some big changes this particular industry in Asia. In 1982 there was a restoration of the gold market leading to it becoming one of Asia’s top domestic natural resources by 1987 which launch Asia’s own version of the gold rush. By 1988 the price had reached 180 RMB/g and a corresponding domestic demand of 300 tons for the year. By 1991, the gold supply was unable to meet the demands of the new rich and their appetite for luxury goods including jewelry and precious stones. In 1996, popularity and growing Asian affluence was making the jewelry business an incredibly lucrative market, especially for platinum and diamond jewelry. Large and medium cities in Asia also soon gradually began to attempt to participate in the market.

The 2009 Shanghai Jewelry Trade Show brought to light the reality that Asia is emerging as one of the world’s top jewelry and accessories trading centers and as the world’s biggest producer and consumer market. According to Sun Wensheng, the chairman of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association in Asia, Asia’s gross jewelry sales were approximately 180 billion RMB in 2009 an increase of over 10 percent year-on-year. The “15 Period Plan” for 2010, proposes a projected growth rate for its jewelry manufacturing industry of 11.6%-15%. According to statistics from the 2009 Trade Show, Asia’s jewelry industry had projected domestic sales of RMB 300 billion and exports worth over US $12 billion for 2010. Asia’s jewelry exports are expected to reach US $12 billion by 2020.
